The Killefer Institute for Quantum Studies (IQS) at Chapman University transforms a historically and culturally significant site into a new center for research, collaboration, and public engagement. The project, currently pursuing LEED Gold certification, brings the Institute’s previously dispersed programs into one cohesive location, combining the restored Lydia D. Killefer School with a contemporary two-story expansion that frames a central courtyard and brings in abundant natural light.
Built in 1931, the Killefer School is a nationally registered historic landmark, recognized as California’s first voluntarily desegregated school. The adaptive reuse preserves defining features, including the octagonal tower, terracotta vents, and low-pitched roof, while renewing the main entry lobby with educational displays that honor the Cypress Barrio’s Hispanic community. Specialized labs, gathering areas, and informal work zones support both focused research and spontaneous exchange, fostering a comfortable and intellectually vibrant environment.
The new building echoes the historic building’s material palette with smooth plaster and terracotta tile details, bridging historic character with a contemporary identity. Outdoor spaces extend the project’s people-focused approach through three distinct courtyards, each designed for social connection, group gathering, or quiet reflection. The southern courtyard is anchored by a mature oak tree, while native and pollinator-friendly landscaping promotes ecological resilience throughout the grounds.
This thoughtful adaptive reuse and expansion repositions IQS as a beacon of innovation and cultural memory, reflecting Chapman University’s commitment to honoring history while advancing quantum science and building community.
