Lausd John Burroughs Middle School Campus Modernization

John Burroughs Middle School is located in Hancock Park, CA with the majority of the structures on the campus built in 1923 and 1926. In 1924 when the school first opened there were 400 students, today almost 2,000 students from grades 6-8 attend the school.

Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects was enlisted to complete a master plan / needs assessment of the campus to explore what new program and upgrades were necessary to keep the campus functional and up-to-date on current educational specifications.

Multiple options were explored that combined renovating the historic buildings and portable buildings, with new construction for additional program space such as food service, multipurpose rooms and classrooms.

The selected scheme will provide much-needed current specialty and standard classroom space, seismically upgrade existing buildings, and new multipurpose space.

Existing structures totaling approximately 100,000 sf will be upgraded to current LAUSD design standards and seismically retrofit.

The selected scheme involved the design of 3 new buildings: a food services + classroom building, a 2-story classroom building and a maintenance and operations building.

The new campus will have a cohesive landscape identity complete with outdoor classrooms and modern technology all while keeping the historic character of the campus intact.
